This week, poet Christine Hemp, Port Townsend Police and
Jefferson County Sheriff's departments collaborate with the sailing
ship Adventuress for Connecting Chord, a poetry workshop. The week
culminates in a poetry reading at 7:30 p.m. this Friday, March 25 at
Pope Marine Park Building.
Monday through Friday of this week, seven teens, two Port
Townsend police officers, one Jefferson County sheriff's deputy and
one parole officer are joined by three members of the Adventuress
crew to work with Hemp and her assistant Renata Friedman in creating
poetry. The City of Port Townsend sponsors the program, which
involves youths from the Jefferson County juvenile justice system.
Friedman, a Port Townsend native currently working as an actor in
New York City, returned for the week to assist Hemp with the
program. She said that the lack of familiarity with life aboard ship
was a great equalizer among workshop participants.
On Monday, the crew introduced the participants to the
Adventuress, explaining shipboard terminology and touring the boat.
The group will set sail throughout the week.
The public is invited to the poetry reading at week's end.
