Poems To Live By

"Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?"

-- Mary Oliver

Christine Hemp taught writing at Harvard University’s Extension School for five years. She now teaches workshops across the country and abroad. Her students range from Los Alamos National Laboratory scientists, to University of New Mexico students, to Taos Pueblo tribal members, one of whom said she "opened the second door." In a recent British workshop, her students included the head of the London Tibetan Buddhist Center, a Rwandan journalist, and an East German poet.

She has also taught at The Santa Fe Writers Conference, Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, San Juan College, and Willamette University where she was invited as visiting poet. She taught for Skyros in Tobago last year, and recently gave a talk about art and the written word at SITE Santa Fe. She is an art critic and has been a staff writer for THE, Santa Fe's Monthly Magazine for the Arts and is a contributor to Art & Auction Magazine.

Christine Hemp teaches poetry courses tailored to fit participants, whether they be novices or experienced writers. Poetry takes us to the edge, that place out of the corner of the eye where beauty, dread, joy, anger, love, and celebration meet. To write from the body, to stretch one's facility with language -- to read and write poetry is to expand the boundaries of experience.
